For some reason, WinXP doesn't know that your PC has ACPI, and can turn itself off on command from the OS. I suggest you do a search on ACPI in this forum...I 'm pretty sure this has been raised ...

My desktop occasionally fails to shut down properly. It seems to complete Windows’ shutdown process, but then just freezes–without actually turning off. Pressing the power button accomplishes nothing.
