As millions of Americans hunker down for the winter storm, 19 states and Washington, D.C., have declared states of emergency.

Light snow is accumulating across parts of Missouri, with temperatures cold enough to cause it to stick, and a second surge of snow is expected to bring the majority of the accumulated snow in the metro,

Track the winter storm as it's forecasted to bring heavy snow and extremely cold weather to the U.S., reaching millions from the southern U.S. to the Northeast.

The southern part of Western North Carolina is supposed to get around 1/2 foot of snow and windchill down to 22 below, according to the NWS.

The storm, which hasn’t formed yet, is expected to reach the Garden State by early Sunday morning and continue through Sunday night or early Monday.
