Built from 122 pieces of cast iron and shipped in from France, the Ross Fountain is a neoclassical masterpiece. Edinburgh gun maker, Daniel Ross saw an earlier version at the Great Exhibition of 1862. He liked it so much he commissioned a bigger version in 1869 and donated it to the city. Ross never got to see his fountain installed in Princes Street Gardens. He died in 1871, a year before its completion.
