Most species need legs and feet for walking, but not the bandtail searobin! This species has fin rays that are modified from the front of its pectoral fins allowing the fish to walk along the seabed. For a fish that spends most of its time navigating from inshore waters to the continental shelf, this is a good adaptation to have, as it allows the searobin to probe for food hidden underneath the mud- sand bottoms of the ocean floor.
